NEW INTERVIEW WITH ADAM KELLY FROM UKHC BAND BROKEN TEETH ON XMORE THAN INKX
MTI: Alright Mate, do you want to introduce yourself and the rest of Broken Teeth?
Adam: Yo, I’m Adam, I play drums then there is Dave/Euan on guitars, Dale on vocals and Paolo on bass. Est’2007.
MTI: How did Broken Teeth come about?
Adam: Me and Dale always wanted to play, show and tour. Dave had just moved to Manchester for uni, we met him through a friend, and that started it. Been through numbers of members but us three have and will stick it out.
MTI: What were your goals when you first started the band?
Adam: The goal is the same goal as it is today, play shows, hang out, tour ad hang out some more.
MTI: How did the relationship with Purgatory come about?
Adam: We have always been friends, playing shows, hanging out, and it just happened.
MTI: You just released the EP ‘Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked’, what’s the reaction been like to the record?
Adam: Ain’t no rest for the wicked has been the best record we have done and has had the best reaction, I don’t think there is many left and it has only been out a few months. Still alot of room for improvement we feel.
MTI: You had some troubles in Spain on the European tour this year. What happened, and what did you think of the reaction from the UKHC scene back home?
Adam: Yeah that’s right, we were just hanging out on the beach and when we came back all the personal belongings had gone. From phones and passports to toothbrushes and trainers. Thankfully none of the equipment got stolen! Oh the fund thing was actually insane, never seen anything like it. It helped a lot, to those reading this that helped us out, we owe you one!
MTI: How was the tour experience minus the trouble?
Adam: Tour was sick, we had planned to tour with Survival lads a bunch of times but never happened so it was sick to finally do it and get out!
MTI: You lot are probably one of the most popular bands in the UK now, any plans to venture to Asia, Australia and the US to build on that?
Adam: Ha, I wouldn’t say that, but I think we’re starting to do good for ourselves. We have a bunch of stuff planned but it all costs money, we’re not all rich kids so we’ve got to save as best as we can! And for now we want to concentrate on a full length.
MTI: You play a lot of shows, how do you find the time?
Adam: It’s harder to find time now as we live all over the place, but in the past we and I myself have put the band first, probably the reason I don’t have a sustainable income and a place of my own!
MTI: How long have you been straight edge?
Adam: We’re not a straight edge band, but I personally don’t know, not been keeping track. it’s not an issue to me!
MTI: Did you feel a lot of negativity when you first claimed?
Adam: Nah, it was all cool, no one else’s business!
MTI: How long have you been involved in hardcore?
Adam: I guess I’ve been involved since I first started coming shows which was around 2005.
MTI: How do you think UKHC is doing at the minute?
Adam: UK hardcore is really good, every show is busy, and that’s what you want. We’ve got a lot of youth coming over from the metalcore scene, but at their age it’s the best age to get into hardcore. I just hope they last more than a year.
MTI: What was the best show you’ve played?
Adam: I couldn’t give you a particular show, but Vienna, Austria is always an insane show. Glasgow & Manchester are always cool.
MTI: Who was your favourite band to play alongside?
Adam: I couldn’t even tell you, played with so many of my favourite bands.
MTI: Any new material in the pipeline?
Adam: Yeah we’re currently in the slow process of writing the full length!
MTI: Who are your influences; musically and personally?
Adam: Killswitch made me want to drum and I learnt from watching that DVD relentlessly, and any band with insane riffs does it for me.
MTI: Any advice to anyone thinking of starting a band?
Adam: New bands should do what they want, start a trend, tour the world!
MTI: What bands are you listening to at the moment?
Adam: I always have my iPod on shuffle, new Fire&Ice is a top player.
